i would like to tell you that im lonely.
On may 19th and 26th of 2023, Skyler Locke showed his first solo art experience, a thoughtful and profound look on loneliness and the depths it holds. The show contained multiple paintings along with a short film being projected on the wall. The centerpiece of the show was himself, sitting in the front of the room, with a sheet over his head and the word "lonely" slowly crawling across his face.
The work started with his residency at Springhouse Downtown, an art space focused on connecting people together through the power of art. Over 8 months, he spent time making art, building community, and most importantly, developing practices to deepen his connection with himself and the creative mystery.
While the show was about Skylers relationship with his loneliness, it was also designed to create a reflection for the viewer. The intention was not only to expose himself, but to expose every person in the room.
the viewer experience.
"I attended Skyler's art show and was moved. As the video played on the screen of Skyler growing up, and an unknown person sat under a white sheet with the word lonely scrolling across the face of the person, I sat mesmerized. My mind was put on hold while I let my heart take over. I felt so much, but mostly what I was aware of, is that those who are lonely in our world have a barrier around them. We often ignore loneliness, hoping it will go away. No one approached the figure. The person sat there, unnamed, no face, and no one broke the barrier. I am still sitting with that experience. Thank you Skyler." - JF
"Skyler is a true creative. 'i would like to tell you that i’m lonely' was a powerful piece of performance art expertly curated to bring the audience into the vulnerable world of a young man coming-of-age in a culture of disconnection. Beginning with incredibly moving spoken word poetry, Skyler draws the viewer in with catchy beats, lyrics reminiscent of a childhood long gone, and reflections on community and the future. As beautiful and, at times, hilarious footage captivate the onlooker-turned-participant, those watching begin to question their role in this unfolding story - How do we isolate ourselves? What role do we play in others’ isolation? All the while, the ghost of Skyler sits front and center, almost unrecognizable amidst the imagery except for the word 'lonely' slowly scrolling across a blank, white sheet of a face. After taking in these visuals and the other art in the space, audience members are left wondering: Where are the lonely ghosts among us, hiding in plain sight, and how do we reach them?" - HL
“Skyler’s art show was provoking. Through his exploration of loneliness, he took me through a journey from his childhood to young adulthood. I was introduced to a boy who had but one friend and a younger sister. As time went on, the boy lost the only company he knew. Standing in front of a camera was the only way he learned to console his loneliness. Throughout the performance I watched an awkward boy become a lonely young man. Standing alone on his 19th birthday, it was clear his childhood loneliness became a self-inflicted solitude. I left feeling struck by Skyler’s ability to display the shift in the qualities of his loneliness, and wondered about my own.” - TA
